Can pomegranate support your gut microbiome?
The short answer
Yes, pomegranate can support the gut microbiome as part of a varied, plant-rich diet.
Pomegranate provides:
Fibre
Vitamin C
Potassium
Copper
Manganese
Colourful plant pigments
Polyphenols called ellagitannins
When pomegranate reaches the colon, certain gut bacteria can transform its ellagitannins into bioactive compounds called urolithins, including urolithin A.
These compounds are being studied for their potential roles in cellular health, inflammatory pathways and metabolic health. The fibre and polyphenols in pomegranate also provide useful nourishment for the gut ecosystem.
However, each person’s microbiome is different, so the amount and type of urolithins produced can vary from person to person.
What makes pomegranate interesting for gut health?
Pomegranate contains polyphenols that interact with microorganisms living in the gut.
Certain gut bacteria can transform pomegranate polyphenols into compounds called urolithins, including urolithin A.
Urolithins are being studied for their potential roles in:
Cellular health
Inflammatory pathways
Metabolic health
Mitochondrial function
Cardiovascular health
However, not everyone produces urolithins in the same way. The amount produced can vary according to the individual’s gut microbiome.

Does pomegranate improve the gut microbiome?
The early research is interesting, but we do not yet know whether regularly eating pomegranate creates meaningful, lasting improvements in the human gut microbiome.
A 2024 human study found that participants’ ability to produce urolithin A influenced how pomegranate affected microbial pathways involved in bile-acid and cholesterol metabolism.
This suggests that two people may eat the same food but respond differently because their microbiomes are not identical.
Pomegranate is therefore best viewed as one polyphenol-rich food within a diverse diet, rather than a treatment for dysbiosis or digestive symptoms.

Other potential benefits of pomegranate
Research has also examined pomegranate in relation to:
Blood pressure and cardiovascular health
Oxidative stress
Blood glucose regulation
Exercise recovery
Inflammatory markers
A 2024 review of 22 randomised controlled trials found reductions in pooled blood-pressure measurements. However, the study results varied considerably.
Pomegranate should not replace medication, medical care or a balanced dietary pattern.

Whole pomegranate arils are usually the better everyday choice.

A small serving of unsweetened pomegranate juice can fit into a balanced diet, but more is not necessarily better.

Roasted vegetables
Hummus
Smoothie bowls
Sparkling water with mint and lemon
Pomegranate can help increase plant variety, but your overall eating pattern remains more important than any individual “superfood.”
Recipe: Pomegranate, Black Rice and Herb Salad

This colourful salad combines whole grains, herbs, healthy fats and polyphenol-rich plants.
Ingredients
2 cups cooked and cooled black rice or quinoa
½–1 cup pomegranate arils
1 small cucumber, diced
half orange cupsicum, diced
½ cup chopped fresh mint
½ cup chopped fresh parsley
1/3 cup crumbled goat’s cheese
¼ cup crushed walnuts, almonds or pistachios
1 tablespoon mixed pumpkin and sunflower seeds
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Juice of 1 lemon
Black pepper to taste
Method
Place the cooled black rice in a large bowl.
Add the pomegranate, cucumber, mint and parsley.
Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice.
Toss gently to combine.
Top with goat’s cheese, crushed nuts and seeds.
Season with black pepper and serve.
For a more substantial meal, add grilled salmon, chicken, tofu, tempeh or chickpeas according to your preferences and tolerance.

Pomegranate is a nutritious, polyphenol-rich fruit that can contribute to plant diversity and a balanced diet.
