When it comes to understanding our health, one size rarely fits all.

The key to feeling truly well lies in knowing exactly what your body needs — not what works for someone else.

Have you ever felt like your body is trying to tell you something — but no one’s really listening?

Maybe you’ve been told your blood tests are “normal,” yet you still deal with bloating, inflammation, thyroid symptoms, or hormonal fluctuations that leave you feeling off balance.

You eat well, stay active, and try to do all the right things — but something still feels out of sync.

That was me too.

For years, I experienced ongoing inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and thyroid challenges that conventional testing couldn’t explain.

It wasn’t until I turned to personalised nutrition testing (also known as individual nutrition analysis) that I finally started to understand what my body was trying to say.

Through targeted assessments — including iron studies, SIBO breath testing, and metagenomic microbiome analysis — I discovered what was really happening beneath the surface.

Low iron was affecting my thyroid function and hormone balance, while bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and gut imbalances were disrupting nutrient absorption and driving inflammation.

That’s the power of understanding your biology instead of guessing — and it’s exactly what personalised nutrition testing can do for you.

Let’s explore how this approach works and how it can completely change your health journey.

What Is Personalised Nutrition Testing?

Personalised nutrition testing (or individual nutrition analysis) is a detailed look at your body’s unique nutritional, metabolic, and gut profile. It goes far beyond generic dietary advice, helping you understand how your body absorbs nutrients, converts food into energy, and responds to stress, toxins, and hormones.

Through targeted functional tests — like microbiome mapping, nutrient panels, or SIBO breath testing — we can identify exactly what’s happening inside your body and design nutrition strategies that restore balance from the inside out.

This approach is especially helpful because it removes the guesswork. Instead of following broad recommendations, you get a clear, personalised plan that fits your unique health profile.

It’s like having a roadmap designed just for you.

How Personalised Nutrition Testing Can Change Your Health

When you understand your body’s specific needs, everything shifts.

Here's what personalised testing can uncover for you:

Identify nutrient deficiencies – find out if you’re low in key vitamins or minerals like iron, zinc, or B12 that impact energy and hormones.

Reveal bacterial imbalances or SIBO – detect overgrowths or microbiome shifts that affect digestion, bloating, and absorption.

Understand thyroid and hormone connections – identify nutrient or gut factors that influence thyroid and hormonal function.

Assess metabolic health – learn how efficiently your body converts food into energy.

Create a targeted nutrition plan – align your meals and supplements with your biology, not generic advice.

Once I corrected my iron deficiency and addressed my gut overgrowth, my energy stabilised, my digestion improved, and my thyroid markers began to rebalance.

That’s the power of knowing — and working with — your body instead of guessing.

Is Nutrigenomics Testing Worth It?

You might have heard about nutrigenomics — the study of how your genes affect your response to food and nutrients. This testing can reveal how well you process fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins, or whether you’re genetically predisposed to certain deficiencies.

In my experience, nutrigenomics testing adds another layer of clarity — but it’s most effective when combined with other data, such as microbiome or blood analysis.

It's important to remember that genes are just one piece of the puzzle. Lifestyle, environment, and current health status also play huge roles. Nutrigenomics testing works best when combined with other assessments and professional guidance.

If you’re curious, it’s a good idea to discuss this option with a qualified nutritionist who can interpret the results in the context of your overall health.

Functional Testing: The Key to Truly Personalised Nutrition

Functional testing looks beyond symptoms to uncover the root causes of imbalance.

Rather than asking “What can I take for my bloating or fatigue?”, functional testing asks “Why is this happening in the first place?”

It’s one of the most powerful tools for creating a personalised nutrition plan — especially for people struggling with gut health issues, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, or inflammatory symptoms.

Here are some of the most valuable types of functional tests I use in practice:

1️⃣ Microbiome Testing (e.g. Metagenomic Stool Analysis)

This is one of the most advanced and insightful tools for understanding your gut health.

What it measures:

  • The diversity and abundance of your gut bacteria, yeasts, and other microbes

  • How well your microbiome supports digestion, immune function, and inflammation control

  • Levels of beneficial species that produce short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate) — essential for gut lining repair

  • Presence of potentially harmful bacteria that can trigger bloating, IBS symptoms, or nutrient malabsorption

Why it matters: Your gut microbiome affects everything — digestion, mood, hormonal function, metabolism, and even how your body handles hormones like estrogen.

By understanding your microbial landscape, we can create a plan that uses targeted prebiotics, probiotics, and dietary strategies to restore balance and improve energy, mood, and digestion.

💚 I consider microbiome testing (such as metagenomic sequencing) one of the most valuable tools in personalised nutrition today.

2️⃣ SIBO Breath Testing (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)

SIBO occurs when bacteria that normally live in the large intestine start growing in the small intestine — where they don’t belong.

What it measures: A simple breath test detects gases (hydrogen, methane, or hydrogen-sulfide) produced by bacteria after consuming a specific sugar solution.

Why it matters: Different gas patterns point to different subtypes of SIBO — for example:

  • Hydrogen-dominant SIBO → often causes bloating, diarrhoea, and malabsorption

  • Methane-dominant SIBO → linked with constipation and slower metabolism

  • Hydrogen-sulfide SIBO → can cause fatigue, brain fog, and sulfur intolerance

Knowing your SIBO type allows for a precise treatment approach — from dietary protocols to antimicrobial or prokinetic support.

3️⃣ Food Sensitivity & Allergy Testing (IgG and IgE Panels)

Sometimes, chronic inflammation or digestive discomfort is linked to how your immune system reacts to certain foods.

IgE testing identifies true allergies — immediate immune reactions (like hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis).

IgG testing, on the other hand, measures delayed food sensitivities, which can cause subtle, long-term symptoms such as bloating, headaches, fatigue, and skin issues.

Why it matters: By identifying and temporarily removing reactive foods, you can reduce inflammation, calm your gut lining, and improve digestion and energy.

However, food sensitivities are often a symptom of deeper gut imbalance — which is why I always combine IgG/IgE results with microbiome and SIBO testing for a complete picture.

4️⃣ Other Functional Tests That Deepen Insight

  • Nutrient and Mineral Panels – identify deficiencies in iron, magnesium, B12, or selenium (key for thyroid and energy).

  • Organic Acids Test (OAT) – shows how well your body’s cells produce energy, detoxify, and manage oxidative stress.

  • Hormone & Cortisol Profiles (DUTCH or Saliva) – track how stress and hormones affect energy, metabolism, and mood.

🌿 Why These Tests Matter

Together, these tests form a 360° view of your health — revealing connections between your gut, metabolism, and hormones that standard testing often misses.

How to Get Started with Personalised Nutrition Testing

If you’re ready to understand your body on a deeper level, here’s where to start:

  1. Work with a qualified practitioner — a Clinical Nutritionist experienced in functional testing (like microbiome, SIBO, or nutrient analysis).

  2. Share your full health picture — discuss your energy, digestion, symptoms, and goals.

  3. Complete your tests — this might include blood work for nutrient levels, stool analysis for gut balance, or breath testing for SIBO.

  4. Review your results — your practitioner will help you interpret what the data means for your thyroid, metabolism, and gut.

  5. Follow a personalised plan — using food, supplements, and lifestyle changes tailored to your results.

  6. Track progress and adjust — your body evolves, and so should your plan.

Taking these steps can empower you to make informed choices that support your well-being every day.
